Retro anime throwback RPG Cosmic Star Heroine gets a new trailer for E3 [VIDEO]

With E3 2016 right around the corner, it’s time for developers to start releasing trailers showcasing their progress on upcoming games. First up is Cosmic Star Heroine, a game that was Kickstarted a few years ago and is set for a summer release.

Developer Zeboyd Games brings a “turn-based sci-fi Japanese-style RPG” with a visual style reminiscent of anime from the late 80s and early 90s. The gameplay appears to be a mixture of Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star with a turn-based battle system. Here are some of the features listed on the original Kickstarter page:

  • Save anywhere! Minimal grinding (unless you want to)!
  • Brisk pacing that respects your time!
  • No separate battle screen! Battles take place directly in the dungeons & areas that you explore!
  • 2D visual style straight from the height of gaming’s 16-bit era!
  • Animated cutscenes reminiscent of the Sega CD & Turbo Duo era!

If you’re a fan of retro anime or the old era of turn-based RPGs, then you might want to put this on your list of summer games. Cosmic Star Heroine will be available as a $14.99 Cross-Buy title for PS4 and PS Vita later this summer. Zeboyd Games has also teamed up with Limited Run Games for a physical release of Cosmic Star Heroine at an undisclosed date.

    Up to 8 bit is retro!

    • Maybe depends of how old you are. I guess about 90% of the audience might be young enough to accept this as Retro. Including me, but lucky me, I’m only 33yrs old ;D

      • It was joke with 8 bits! I begun with Atari XL/XE and I used many other platform.
        .
        But screenshot from this game show GFX in better condition even than 16bit machines did possible. Resolution up to 640px and q’ty of colours more than 16 – sometimes 256 – was possible on the only the most powerful machines but was used in only AAA games.

        For me this game has “cartoon” GFX – not retro. Eg.:
        +) look at the leaves – smooth changes of green – not dithering;
        +) shadows of characters&builds;
        +) kerning in fonts.
        this are not possible to generate the picture “in motion” even on the 16 bit machines.

        • sure, it remembers more of the PSX and Saturn era. and while I grew up with NES and Atari, it still creates retro feelings to see that, just as banjo kazooie would. I guess everything after the N64 era wouldn’t work for me though.

      I think 5th vid gen and everything before it should qualify as retro. But that is just my opinion of course.

      • I try to define retro by me – if you “can” or “have to” use emulator to run older game (maybe all software?) – then it is retro.
        .
        Emulator for old software of ‘cos, not emulator other platform/OS – software running on the Linux from windose via Wine is not retro.
