Rumor: PS4K codenamed “NEO,” upgraded CPU, GPU, and RAM

ps4k

The PlayStation 4K rumors have continue, this time with Giant Bomb and their supposed sources weighing in on the rumored console.

According to sources close to Giant Bomb, the PlayStation 4K is real and Sony has given it the codename “NEO.” The system is rumored to sell at a price point of $399, putting it at the same price of the original PlayStation 4 launch. What’s more interesting is that Giant Bomb says beginning in October, developer will be required to ship games with two modes: Base and NEO. Base mode will be for the regular PlayStation 4 owners, while NEO will take advantage of the new iteration’s improved specs.

An additional 512 MiB will be provided for games in NEO mode, and games running on 1080p TVs will have a “more stable frame rate and higher visual fidelity.” Giant Bomb also notes that as expected, NEO will be able to output games at 4K resolution, although developers are not required to support 4K natively. Documents obtained by Giant Bomb state that Sony is mandating that when running in NEO mode, a game’s frame rate must be equal to or greater than what it would be in Base mode.

For those worried about the NEO splitting the PlayStation 4 user base, Giant Bomb suggests that everything else remains the same: both NEO and PS4 owners will play on the same servers, access the same store, have the same UI, and same PlayStation Store.

Finally, NEO might not be ready for an October launch, but developers are free to release their NEO-ready games before the console is available. Games released prior to the NEO mode requirement will require a patch, should the developer decide to, in order to support the NEO’s new specs.

  • hi

isnt the production cost of ps4 near or more than the original $399.99 launch price
    then….. ouch

    • Gotcha47

So that has always been so. The profit is in the games and the rest. And that is what sells very well… They make a huge profit.

      • Thenameless685

actually sony made profits on every ps4 sold out of the gate i dont think why people think they dont

        • SirAngry

It’s one of those myths that refuses to die. t’s not like the silicon inside the thing was cutting edge. It was a cheap APU. At the very least there is no way they were making a loss on PS4s at any point in its life cycle.

        • 54nakaD

Well, there are those variable costs. Such as, R&D, Marketing, Advertising, Labor, etc. R&D alone can costs billions for any prototype brought to life. You can’t quantify those costs into the making of each Console. They just have am overall bottom line of how much was spent and there is the break even point. Once they pass that, that’s where they make money. That’s why no company ever really makes money on Consoles until later on in the Console life, including the games.

      • hi

True but let’s say it cost $405 for production in the ps4 but for the ps4k is $450 , they’re making less money but still a lot …. unless game sales increased

        • That guy

I’m just going to wait for the PS5.

          • hi

            Lol good idea

        • Thenameless685

well they lost money with every ps3 made and had to sell like 2 games to make it up so its not bad

    • Brandon

No, it’s less. They started profiting on the PS4 several months after it came out, so it should be below or around $299 to manufacture by now.

      • hi

        Oh

  • companyoflosers

not gonna happen. would piss off everyone who already owns a ps4 and theyde inevitably end up discontinuing the old one since too many games would end up not working on the older hardware. just wait till your 5 year cycle is up and make a more future proof console the next time around.

    • That guy

The thing is it looks like it’s going to happen.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Nothing is for certain until it comes out of the horse’s mouth.

  • Gotcha47

We buy every year a new smart phone, tablet . So what is the problem. All games are playable. It is only of interest to the ones that own a 4k tv. So no need to buy the new one. Except if you are the usual idiot that is only content whith the latest to play with….. Then it will cost you money and you will only benefit from it if you do have a 4k tv.

    • Thenameless685

well it looses the only real benefits console had which was all the hardware is the same so not need to upgrade so now pc really became a master race now

      • Gotcha47

The pc master race is dying…. Sales are dropping. Simply because the tablet will take over the pc market. A few thousand euro’s for a gamers pc or a few hundred for a tablet. Innovation at pc has also halted. Windows 10 is not going to save them.

        • Thenameless685

well considering console use old pc hardware if pc fails console will fail also….or at least stop moving forward…also considering pc sells more than mobile
          http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/01/27/pc-dominated-worldwide-game-revenue-in-2015
and yeah pc sales are dropping but gaming pc sales are rising

          • Gotcha47

All cars in the world use same components , different names and different prices. The same at console, gaming and pc, gaming and user. 400 euro of a few thousand euro’s. Pc sales are dropping because people are buying tablets these days , cheaper and the performance is very good at the moment. Software sales are rising at the tablets and smart phones, very fast. The pc , well we have one but in the end i am more working at the tablet then the pc. So the momentum for the pc will die away in the end. Why should i buy pc software if the software on the tablet does the same only cheaper. And i can carry it everywhere….

          • Thenameless685

just because you dont need a pc doesnt mean other people dont need one…what the fuck will i do with a tablet that my current phone cant do? also considering my 450 buck pc outpower the consoles, plays games that are not on consoles, plays old games through emulators, encodes video, is used as a storage for my media, etc… why would i own a tablet other than to use kindle

    • who the f… who buys a tablet in first place and who’s buying them every single year? I had my last smartphone for 4 years and my current one is nearly 2 years old now and feels like a new one. Plus you’re comparing communicationdevices and casual-computers to gaming devices. The only audience who would value these 3 things the same would be rich kids. But for me, a tablet or a phone is far, far more important than a gaming console as I need them for work so I could understand to buy them more often. But a gaming console that’s that expensive should stay for quite some years.

I don’t think ppl who would like to play the content on arrival are idiots. It’s allowed to be excited for stuff you like and not being able to play it because they threw out another console just sucks.
And forget about that 4K bullshit, it’s not going to be a 4K console. I mean, maybe Sony is stupid enough to pull that off, but I really, really dount it. It took devs ages to go FullHD and they really sacrificed graphical details and/or fps for this. 4K is so much more density, a PS4K would need far more power than listed here, to make sense. Especially in a world that’s gonna take quite some years to make 4K an environment to develop for.

But who knows, maybe Sony expects buyers to buy one of their own 4K TVs along with that console. It just seems like a pretty shitty marketing strategy as they would target rich kids or sheiks in first place.

      • Gotcha47

You have no idea of the possibility of the tablets these days and they do not cost thousands of euro’s like a pc. And 4k tv are being sold for some time now. So why should i buy another ps4 if the old one still does it’s job…… Oh and you do not need to be a rich kid to buy a smart phone or tablet these days….

        • I’m afraid you just managed to misinterprete every single word I wrote. 1. I’m actually using a tablet for my work, so thanks for the info. But doing so, Im part of a pretty small demographic. I also own a drawing tablet for my work, which is even a smaller market. So yeah, that happens. Tablets remain casual devices though and apsrt from the fact that this market remains a niche barely any tablet user buys one every year. Plus as I said, you’re comparing communication devices and computers to gaming consoles.
          2. With rich kids I’ve been referring to a target audience who would value a gaming console the same as they value a phone or a tablet. For ppl who have to rely on these things professionally, it’s just a dumb comparison as I can live with buying a new phone every 2nd or third year (which I don’t even do) but not a gaming console because that’s just not such a priority.
          3. just because 4K is ‘around’ doesn’t mean it’s something you wanna target your gaming console for. Not after the stress, you’ve put your devs through to at least reach FHD. Ask your local retail store, check statistics or just check your friends and family. 4K is not even something most mainstream customers would even understand and even among geeks it’s not such a buzzword as HD used to be 10 years ago.
Virtual Reality could totally sell this system, but of course not 4K.

          • Gotcha47

Well i do not know on which hill you live but here we all use tablets and it is spreading more. A lot of people do not buy a pc anymore simply because the tablet is doing the job. So who cares about a communication device etc , we want it all in one ! For a good price. Like a few euro’s for a game instead of 60 or 70 euro for a game. And we can play it anytime and place we want it. The world is changing for some time now, instead of years for a object the time between will be shorter and shorter to get a new one on the market for the right price. You do not need to be a rich kid to buy a tablet or smart phone. 4K well that is for the one who want one and they want a console that can handle that. Why else buy a tv if you do not have something that will use the benefit of 4k. VR well i will wait for a year at least to see if it is around then. Simply because these hypes have failed until now. So in short, tablets will be the nr 1 and the pc and consoles will not be around then in the end.

          • VR is already exploding right now. I actually thought this would be a hype, but try it out, check some reviews of the vive or the rift, listen to what they usually say about the PS VR and it gets more and more clear that this is here to stay and it obviously brings something far more interesting than a 4K resolution would bring in contrast to Full HD.

Other than 4K I highly believe that VR is going to really explode, once Sony brings it to the mass market and if the rumor’strue that they bring a new PS4 version than it’s obviously for VR in first place. Which would be OK, but still annoys me as it’s gonna split the non-VR offer.

4K will need far more than that. HD took ages to gain momentum and 4K will need far longer, because most consumers don’t see the real advantage in it or don’t have the money and/or the room for buying a 4K TV that would really make sense. And I’d say everything below 40″ screens just doesn’t make that much sense for the mainstream masses. Geeks, sure, but not the aunt next door. For most ppl, HDTV meant a true change for everything they knew. Suddenly they had a flat TV with LCD screen that was 3 times bigger than their old one AND it was HD. Compared to this, the switch to 4K brings them nothing but a sharper image and this isn’t so important as long as the common TV stations aren’t broadcasting in 4K (and even then it might not have such a weight).
Ppl might just buy a 4K when their HDTV might break down and they need something new. But even then, the aunt next door might fancy an HDTV as the pricetags for pretty good LED HDTVs are falling in favor of 4K and auntie might not see the difference anyways.
I personally wish they would just skip 4K at all and move on to 8K right away. 4K is just an artificially created step to sell some more devices while the contrast from HD to 8K might be actually so big, even auntie would see it as it would really create new kinds of display experiences.
But well, as I doubt the PS4.5 would be able to output anything rendered in realtime in 4K, 8K would be even worse. And playing a 1080p game on an 8K screen would surely look awful. But yeah, I’m getting off track.
I just don’t see 4K gaining any momentum to reach that break even of relevance yet.

And again: I don’t say rich kids buy smart phones and tablets. But buying them on an annual basis and giving them the same priority is definitely something that applys to rich kids. I could also say ‘ppl buy a car once every 10 years and so should they not buy a console that often’ and it would also be kinda ridiculous. I don’t know about you, but having a tablet and a smartphone helps me earn my money in a kinda crucial way. A console doesn’t. So I’d rather buy 10 tablets and smartphone for every console I get. It’s a different audience. It’s a different usecase. It’s a different pair of shoes. It’s just a bad comparison. I understand what you’re trying to say, but you don’t really speak for many. One main reason to buy a console at all is to put a checkmark on the list, saying ‘I got something to play the stuff that’s on right now’. And throwing out a new iteration of that console just spits in the face of ppl who’re treating it like that. And most gamers aren’t really core gamers. Most gamers are pretty casual and used to the idea, that buyong a PS lets you play PS games for quite a long time. With the PS3 this meant something around 6 years I believe. But now it’s more like ‘buying a PS let’s you play PS games but you can also buy another version of that PS to play them with the fps they’re supposed to be played with’. I don’t really see how it’s so hard to understand that this is an awkward situation. Because if I’s be a fan of that logic, I’d be a PC gamer in first place.

          • oh man, sorry for the endless text, happens when I should be working ;D

  • Thenameless685

the memory on the original ps4 is 176 gb/s not 17 so for those wondering why the big increase its a typo

  • I’d really really hate it if those rumors would be true. And after Sony haven’t denied them, it seems like they are. I understand that VR might demand this, but it’s still a punch in the face of everyone who bought a PS4 and was glad he had that one super-mainstream-system to play most relevant games for the next few years.
After that PS4.5 is going to come out, of course devs will also create non-VR games that might make use of its additional power. It’s gonna fragment their market, taking one of the most important factors of consoles away. At least for me.

    • Xvldark

      And me

    • Tina Brandy

Why does it hurt you, that there is something newer available? It’s like that in every other industry. Heck, many of my friends still enjoy their PS3.

      • Because for me a playstation is a device to play the stuff that’s on. If I want nostalgia, I play Nintendo stuff. Might be wrong for some ppl to handle it that way, but most PS games are most of the time sold through their looks and their experience. And these aspects are usually pretty timebound (does this word even exist? lol) There aren’t too many games on f.e. the PS3 that are really that timeless but were amazing when I played them back then. And as I said, I bought the PS4 to just put a checkmark on the Playstation list for a few years and this just sucks. Especially if it’s used to create ‘better versions’ of the same game. It’s just a stupid and bad design decision. Or it would be, if it’s true, to stay with the fact that it’s still a rumor.

        • Tina Brandy

What you said was entirely subjective. I truly welcome a newer playstation 4. And remember that games will still be playable on the current one.

  • Xvldark

Well, go neofuck yourself sony, i aint droppin 400$ or whatever every weekend. And for those comparing it to a phone, please, is bad enough as it is with the damm mobile/tablet bs we goin thru…

If this rumor is true, then we can all say consoles died this year.

    • Tina Brandy

Every weekend? How about every 3rd year? If you don’t like it, then don’t buy it.

      • Xvldark

Yeah, you say that now, wait 5 years, and youll be dropping it every weekend too.

    • Gotcha47

You should read the article instead of thumbsucking.

      • Xvldark

And you should make more sense next time you comment, cuz i dont have a clue what you on about o.o

  • John Gray

Surely thay could do this by over clocking it or freeing up some GPU like xboxone did or make the vr box do it or combination if all 3.
Il beleve it when I see it

  • Sweet Taint

Minor improvements for a console I rarely use. My next-console money will go to the NX.

    • Brandon

Minor improvements? That GPU upgrade is not minor.

      • Sweet Taint

        Negligible.

        • Brandon

          The ps4 has a gpu equivalent to a r9 270, while this has a gpu stronger than a r9 280x.

          • Gotcha47

Well the NX, first see what it is, then the price and most important the games it will get…. Beautifull console and crappy games will not cut it. And what will happen to nintendo if the nx fails…..

          • Brandon

If the NX is going to have a second screen controller, I see it being as powerful as the xbox or bit more.

  • That guy

So my PS4 didn’t even make it to 3 years?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Your PS4(debatable if you actually have one) will live on since it will be supported with games despite whether this rumor ends up being true.

      • Gotcha47

If people read the article and understood what it says , then live would be easier

  • Brandon

I don’t understand why people are upset about this. It’s not like your going to lose games on your ps4. If you care for more power, and want your games to run better or at a higher resolution, you have the option. Your games will still run fine on the normal ps4. If they don’t release this upgrade, you’d be playing games at the same settings. If they do release this upgrade, you’d still be playing at the same settings, unless you get the upgrade. People sound clueless asf about this situation. It’s like, complain first, and actually think about it never.

    • Gotcha47

Well that is because people do not read the articles. Then you get this !

    • Xvldark

So youre telling me, its 100% guaranteed that “base” versions WONT be half assed?

I am against it because base versions will probably be what wiiu 3d party has been getting, half assed ports.

Ive seen enough for last couple or 3 years to have a guess.

Look we dont know if this is a rumor or not and we all splitted up already. Way to go…

      • Matthew Stapleton

Agreed, it’ll be like the regular PS4 is a V6, and the 4K is a V8. We all bought V6’s and now theres a V8 coming out. Forgive the automotive analogy.

      • Brandon

The game’s will play exactly the same as they do now. Third party games are usually multiplat, so they still have to make theit game for xbox one. Xbox one is weaker than ps4, so the ps4 will get just as good of a port. It’s nothing like the wii u situation. PS4 owners still buy games, and there’s lots of them, so no developer is that stupid to give them shit ports.

        • Xvldark

I hope you are right, but you cant blame me for being skeptic about the whole thing, too many promises broken.

ill believe it when i see it, which i guess itll be pretty soon.

          • Tina Brandy

Even when certain titles launched on both the PS4 and the PS3, the PS3 version was still outstanding in my opinion. I was actually amazed they could even run the games on the old system at all. Just look at Far Cry 4.

          • Xvldark

You have your part of truth but the ps3 version did drag the next gen version potential down. Im not sure how that would work if they make this new neo to the current one.

  • n3s4l1f3

thank you….sony….for releasing a new console every 3 years, now i know when to buy the PS5 (2019) or PS5.5(8K) (2022) console….(thank you notes piano music playing).

    • Gotcha47

It is not a new console but a upgraded one !! And every year there is a new phone you buy or a tablet you buy. Also you will be able to play all the games.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

To be fair, you should direct that at Nintendo as well. This is a first for Sony in regards to an upgrade. Besides that, it’s still technically a rumor since nothing has been officially confirmed.

      • n3s4l1f3

that’s right, now a days it’s like a trend that companies every 3 or 4 years release a new or upgraded console for $399, so we have to decide to buy the console on day 1 with glitches or wait 2 years to buy a bundle or a cool limited edition, also some games doesn’t play well on PC’s, i’ll wait 2 years before buying the NX new nintendo console, i’ll never buying again a new day 1 console like i did with the WiiU, meanwhile i can play PS4 and PC games.

  • CH3SH

Until it becomes mandatory or i require a 4k tv then its a no sale for me, games still look shiny and sexy enough at the moment for me not to worry 😊👍

  • Love gaming

    I’ll pass I’m not forking 400 for a upgrade..I’m happy with the ps4 I have

  • Gotcha47

Why the darkness, you buy every year a new phone or tablet. So the neo will not have software exclusives, it is for vr and 4k tv. All games will play the same beautifull way as it does now. So i do not want vr and i do not have a 4k tv so the old ps 4 will have the games i like to play. So i do not care about it.

  • I_LIKE_IT

    I don’t have a 4K TV, so I don’t really give a crap about this!

  • Bought my first console – PS4 – 4 months ago. Sooo , new PS4 again? Nope , better go for Xbox 4k at this point.

    • Gotcha47

      Oh how smart that sounds….

  • Steve

I have a 4k TV and some 4k movies so if it is like that I’ll be getting it

    • ReturnoftheBrotha .

It did not say anything about having a 4K Blu-Ray player

  • TomDobo

I dont care ill buy it because why the fuck not. Better frame rate for games is a must and a resolution boost sounds good too. Id be happy with games running native 1440p at 60fps. So thats worth the upgrade alone.

  • Meexa

This reminds me of the issue with hyrule warriors on 3ds and new 3ds, except this will be much worse.
