We’ve previously heard analysts forecasting on PlayStation 4 sales, but the suits over at DFC Intelligence seem to be the most optimistic ones. They predict that the PlayStation 4, and its rival, the Xbox One, will each sell over 100 million units by the year 2020.
While it would be great for Sony to sell that many PlayStation 4 consoles, it does seem a bit unrealistic. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are nowhere near those numbers — only the Wii has sold over 100 million units, and it was a lot cheaper and more novel during its prime.
It’s very likely that the PlayStation 4 sales might eclipse the lifetime sales of the PS3 by 2020, but 100 million units is pushing it — home consoles are getting a lot competition from mobile phones and tablets. And by 2020, we should have a PS5 ready, as Sony has indicated this console generation will be shorter than the previous one, which was abnormally long.
