Sony announces 4.2 million consoles sold through December 28

Andy House, Sony president, introducing PS4

During Kaz Hirai’s CES keynote, Andrew House took the stage to announce 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold worldwide through December 28. The official Sony Twitter account confirmed 2.1 million sales in just two weeks over the holidays, bringing total sales past 4 million. It’s a great start for Sony, who now has a lead over Microsoft who announced 3 million consoles just yesterday.

    PS4 = 4.2 Million Units
    Wii U = 5.2 Million Units
    Xbox One = 3 Million Units…
I can tell who isn’t going to survive this gen

    • Adecentboy777

You forgot to mention, that Wii U is out there for over 1 year and PS4 and Xbox One are available only since 6 weeks or so.

      • Gamer Mania

You also forgot the Wii U sold over 3 Million Units in one month, the PS4 also got 3 million sold within a month…. While the Xbox One is ONLY just reaching 3 million…

        Just saying.

        • Oscar Portillo

This is a joke right , because the Wii U is marketed for kids and teens.

Its a fad and the public allready saw through the Nintendo bs of just releasing the same game over and over again with nothing changing but the title name.

The Wii U is the 3do of this day and age so except defeat or give me some facts that make sense.

I pay good money for next gen not for almost next gen but if your a 12 year old teen then the Wii U is for you.

          • Oscar Portillo

And yes the Wii U will trump the exed box 1;as it is inferior than the Wii U.

        • Adecentboy777

The Wii U sold 3 million over 1 month? I didn’t know that, but since I normally follow all the events, I probably overseen that, but somehow I can’t recall this kind of hot news. Can you give me some links and charts that could proove that? Cause I just doubt that N had such a good month.

          • Yen

The Wii U DID sell 3 Million really fast. The problem was it only sold another 1 Million in the 11 months after that initial rush. Also judging from weekly sales numbers in Japan in December, the Wii U DID sell another million in that 3 weeks. There are numbers out there somewhere if you don’t believe it.

          • Adecentboy777

I checked all the sources on the internet and for now Wii U sold something between 4-5 million units in total, BUT not sold 3 million in one month :) The user “Gamer Mania” said that and I just had to correct this statement since it is not true.

          • Yen

I don’t know how you missed the official Nintendo sales data then. Wii U was released late November and was reported to have sold 3 Million by the end of December 2012. So more like 5-6 weeks, I’ll give you that, but that’s roughly a month. Not that it beats 4.2 million in 6 weeks for the PS4,

          • Adecentboy777

Oh, sorry, but I was referring to 2013. That’s why I said I doubt it sold that well. As of December 2012, well, that’s another thing. Back then the Wii U was a highly anticipated console and I belive that in 5-6 weeks in December of 2012 it was sold 3 million times. A good start but now it is just pathetic how Nintendo can’t handle things. They have no clue I am telling you.

Any console that shifts 3mill in 6 weeks is unlikely to fail. Ps4 will be the market leader but don’t let fanboyism cloud your judgement. Xbox wont go away. I love both my ps4 and x1 the competition between the 2 consoles is what stops developers getting lazy and drives innovation.

      • Gamer Mania

I’m just saying, the Xbox One feels like it could be the Jaguar of this generation, showing off all these features but never promises and ends up being a poor seller.

I got rid of my Xbox One because it just wasn’t for me and it felt like a Windows 8 PC nerfed.

      • Rumpelstiltskin

The Wii U sold over 3 million copies from its launch in november 2012 to january 2013, as did the Xbone and PS4. You can predict the outcome by just looking at the launch sales.

The PS4 will most likely win this generation. But I think that the Wii U will get the second place. No one I know plans on getting the Xbone, but many are considering getting a Wii U this year.

        • steview130

Once the hype of the new mario game dies down interest in the wii u will drop off again. Xbox will be the second position console. Especially when Titanfall and Halo bundles hit the shelves. But ps4 will definitely be the lead console.

          • Rumpelstiltskin

Not likely since Super Mario 3D World was just the beginning. It will be followed by Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Zelda, Bayonetta, Fast Racing Neo, Shadow of the Eternals, X (Xenoblade sequel), and much much more.

          • steview130

Guarantee it still wont outsell xbox one though!

          • Rumpelstiltskin

And why would that be a guarantee? Xbox has a pretty weak collection of exclusives. Halo is not as loved as it was 5 years ago. A lot of people I know who played and loved Halo 1-3 haven’t even played Halo 4. The same goes for Gears of War, Forza and Fable. No one I know liked Judgment, Horizon or Journey.

The franchises of Xbox are slowly dying in popularity. When Call of Duty (available on all platforms) sells better than any of your biggest franchises, something’s wrong.

Xbox One will loose this generation unless they lower the price to somewhere around $349-399, and start making good games again. Bundling Xbone with Kinect was probably the most stupid move ever. Most of us don’t even want it, so it should be a choice as it was with the 360.

Microsoft should also start focusing more on games for Windows, or they’ll loose that market as well with both Mantle and Steam OS on the horizon.

          • steview130

            If you say so bud!

          • Benjammin Carder

The xbone does have wak exclusives

    • Drweirdo

You should consider that the Xbox One is available in less countries than the PS4, plus the Xbox One had a controversy and a higher price tag, which is quite good.

  • Yohan KillSwitch

    Nice!

  • Rob

Congrats Sony. That is impressive since you guys predicted the PS4 to sell over 3 million before 2013 ends and now you guys are on pace to pass 5 million before your March expectations(with the help of Japan). The PS4 is on pace to pass the Wii U this year or next year if this keeps up. These next gen consoles are proving that console gaming is here to stay.

(Note: Not lashing out as a certain some claims)

  • AnonymUce

So these are the numbers from DEC 28th? Well I’m pretty sure its closer to 5 Million now if not pass it. I wish the best to Sony and everyone working there.

    • Adecentboy777

I thinks SONY did every according to the wishes of the GAMERS and that’s why PS4 is selling so good. Till April they will probably pass the 7 million sold units easily since Japan is still ahead :) PS4 is a console built for the GAMERS and that’s why I love it! :) Wii U is my second choice though :)

      • AnonymUce

Same here. Don’t me wrong the XB1 is a great console, Microsoft’s policies are just bullshit. almost every single function of the console is behind a paywall. I’m not very fond of that. I mean even watching Netflix you already paid for is behind XBL. Sony FTW

        • Adecentboy777

Microsoft tried to apply different non friendly policies like always on and so on. They tried to fool the gamers and the users, AND I do not support this kind of attitude :) Beside that the XB1 is not as good (powerfull) in term of the hardware as PS4, so… :)

          • AnonymUce

yup, this is why I don’t want Sony to go bankrupt. MS will ruin gaming with their GOV like restrictions and policies.
