According to sales trackers, the PlayStation 4 has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii U. While the PS4 launched only last November, the Wii U had a whole year on the market, as it hit the stores in November 2012.
Sony officially announced that the PlayStation 4 had sold 4.2 million units as of December 28, while the Wii U’s official sales number was at 4.3 million as of December 15, 2013 (according to Nintendo’s own numbers). Now, reports from sales trackers indicate that the PlayStation 4 has overtaken the Wii U during the first week of 2014.
The Wii U has been struggling ever since it launched, and Nintendo recently revised their Wii U sales forecasts down from 6.8 million to 4.3 million for the current fiscal year. It’s doubtful the console will manage even that.
Analysts have predicted that the PlayStation 4 will sell some 37 million units by the end of 2016. Recently, game industry analyst Michael Pachter predicted that the PS4 will outsell the Wii U this Spring. He was a couple of months off, it seems.
