According to Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida, the light bar featured on the PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller cannot be turned off. The light bar features an LED light that was originally meant to track players with the PlayStation Camera accessory.
Sony initially wanted to ship PlayStation Camera with every PlayStation 4 console, but changed their minds once Microsoft revealed something similar with the Xbox One. Sony changed their minds at the last moment, opting to ship the PS4 for $399 without the PlayStation Camera.
Since the design and development of the DualShock 4 was already finalized, it meant that the light bar would stay. And it now means that it has to be on at all times. Of course, it’ll come in handy should you chose to buy a PlayStation Camera, which will be available at launch for $60.
Last week, Sony confirmed that each PlayStation 4 console will ship with the Playstation Camera demo called “The Playroom”.
