Sony: PlayStation 4 won’t be always-online

PlayStation 4 always on
Sony has ruled out an “always-on connection” for the PlayStation 4, according to the latest issue of GameInformer magazine. There has been a lot of debate about next-gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720) and whether they will require an always-online connection to the Internet.

According to several reports, the upcoming Xbox 720 will require an always-on Internet connection for various reasons, while Sony has now denied the same for the PlayStation 4. Online features are key to the next-gen battle, with Gears of War creator predicting that PlayStation 4 could win of Sony gets its social features right.

Sony’s reasoning isn’t because of their stance on DRM or anything like that. It’s simply because many developing countries don’t have reliable and fast Internet connections for the PlayStation 4 to be always connected.

Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida said that Sony didn’t even consider it, and it will not be a requirement to connect your PlayStation 4 to the Internet.

The PlayStation 4 takes the spotlight in the latest issue of GameInformer, with a 30-page feature on the new console, its games, and more. The upcoming PlayStation 4 title Infamous Second Son is on the cover of the magazine.

Well then, it looks like Ps4 will have an advantage over the Durango/720 then. Microsoft will make Xbox durango/720 always online so they earn money. Microsoft doesn’t care about the consumer but more about the money. Unlike Sony and Nintendo who actually think of the consumer and make their products beniful for the consumer

“doesn’t care about the consumer but more about the money” sony the same lol.” it looks like Ps4 will have an advantage over the Durango/720 then. ” nothing is confirmed ffs.

Please, don’t be such a morons. Peace.

      • Last time I checked, Sony actually apologized about the hacking whilst Microsoft sat on their assholes and did fuck all when Xbox Live got hacked

Yep. Got 8 free games downloaded on my PS3 for it, and I don’t even use a credit card to purchase from the PS store. Talk about customer service.

Didn’t Sony also give out free games on PSN to everybody who connected to PSN at least once before the hack happened?

      • NintendoNoob

You can’t make peace when you call people morons… Idiot

  • Guhtere

Thank God. Because recently, my internet went out for nearly two days, and the entire time I was thinking if I had an always online console, I wouldn’t be able to play games on it at all.

    I’ll type this again:

Smart and not surprising. That’s something only Microsoft will be dumb enough to do.

  • Metal_Man_v2

I thought this was already implied when Sony said that they were trying to widen the appeal of the PS4… Using DRM that requires a constant internet connection would severly limit the audience for the PS4, which is obviously counterproductive to what they said. I guess this is good news? But I thought we already knew this.

  • ILikePikachu

Smart move, Sony. THAT would be a blow for Durango if it’s all-online.

  • Wassup.

Microsoft isn’t going to make the durango (or whatever) be always online. They ant that stupid. If they did they would be such a dumass i would literally LMAO For real (Probably would need to go to the doctor after.)
