Unreal Engine 4 on PlayStation 4 vs PC

Epic is bringing the next-generation game engine, the Unreal Engine 4, to the PS4, PC, and Xbox 720. So far we’ve seen a few demos of UE4 running on the PlayStation 4 and the PC, and now the clever tech heads at Digital Foundry have compared the PS4 and PC version.

Recently, Epic showcased the Unreal Engine 4 at GDC running on a top-end PC, with a quad core Intel i7 CPU and a powerful GeForce GTX 680. This is pretty much as powerful as PCs can get these days, so how does to compare to the PlayStation 4?

PlayStation 4 demoAs the PlayStation 4 vs PC comparison video below shows, the PS4 holds up pretty well against much more powerful PC hardware (at least on paper). The only major differences between the two are lighting and particle effects. Overall, according to analysis by Digital Foundry, the PlayStation 4 version of Unreal Engine 4 is missing some features and has scaled back on others.

The biggest loss is real-time global illumination, where lighting and light sources “bounce off” off different surfaces. Another discovery showed that the PlayStation 4 version of the UE4 demo had “fixed” lighting, while it was dynamic on the PC version.

Of course, the PlayStation 4 features new hardware and its tools and APIs are still in development stages. In time, we’re certain that engine makers like Epic will squeeze a lot more power out of the PlayStation 4. Recently, Epic commented on the PS4 hardware, saying it was the “perfect gaming PC“.

Wow! This was a CRAZY back and forth! There were times where the PS4’s superiority was unanimous and times where the PC emerged the clear victor. When the PS4 is pushed to it’s limits, I believe it will surpass most gaming PCs (including high-end like the one displayed) and quiet those PC master race fags.

That will only only be true if the PS4 costs around $600, or more, depending on how large of a loss Sony is willing to take on it.

If Sony releases a console that’s that expensive again, I don’t think it will survive this economy

:| WTF are you saying? a top end PC will ALWAYS be superior to PS4. Look, i love PS, PC, XBOX and WIIU, every one with their differences, but we got to be honest about it, a PC is a superior gaming machine for graphics. Common people…

I’m going by what I saw. In the beginning of the video, the image definitely looked less detailed on the PC. Then, towards the middle of the video, the PC had more detail than the PS4. Anyone can see that for themselves.

Lol yeah because they decided to use less texture counts in the beginning then said “Ah hell well throw a couple more in there later” on… Its called depth effect… the ps4 doesn’t use it in UE4.

So what’s the PC’s excuse for not being less detailed than the PS4 in some areas.

I think its a tie, both looked awesome but sometimes the PS4 version looks better and other times the PC version looks better but really in the end they both look amazing.

Couldn’t have said it better. There are parts where the PS4 actually has more detail in better colors in the video, and of course the opposite is also true. The PS4 didn’t show some of the dynamic effects like the wind blowing in as well. Both are great and are really shown off well!

You may have been downvoted for suggesting that the PS4 could surpass gaming PCs (some people don’t like that idea) or for including “fags”, as that could offend people?

If it makes you feel any better, I upvoted your comment. Don’t worry about it though, the upvotes don’t really mean anything. Apparently the 3 downvotes = hidden comment thing isn’t true, so it’s pretty pointless.

You guys know it’s basically impossible for the PS4 to be better than the PC used in this demo right? Maybe close, but there is no way it is better. The differences are minor, but if you say the PS4 outshone the PC in this video, you’re lying to yourself

There are times when the PS4 version lags, look around 1:59.

EDIT: I wonder why people voted me down…

I really believe the PC version to look better than the PS4 or 720, the PCs will be the most powerful… you have to accept it, even thought, the PS4 version looks great as well, but if all you want is graphics… then go for a PC.

Really glad Sony is keeping the price at $60 for PS4 games. I thought with a big jump in graphics like this that there would be another jump in price. Couldn’t afford $70 for games.

The price has jumped every gen, PS2 jumped to 50$. PS3 jumped to $60, I’m just saying I’m glad they didn’t repeat.

i never said once that the price didn’t raise just because the console has a better cpu gpu ram memory doesn’t mean it has a leap in graphics the only real difference is lighting and like i said once minecraft shaders have had it for like a year now and thats made by modders if they were to raise the price because of that then sony would fail….

no i play games on 60 fps 30 is fine and last generation i believe did play on 30fps so are you saying u hated last gen?
fps means nothing to graphic upscales you can run 60fps on the lowest graphics setting so i don’t really get what your comment is trying to prove?
graphics haven’t gone up again the only thing that changed is lighting and maybe textures but either way minecraft shaders have had it for almost a year now…..

I think the PC was clearly better, not that it is a surprise or something to be upset about. The only times I paused the video and took more than a few seconds to choose the PC was because the PS4 was lacking the atmospheric effects that obscured the Demon knight dude.

Not that any comparison really matters, what matters is the game – which will be the same for PC, PS4, NextBox and (for the less graphically hungry games) the WiiU (to clarify I have in mind WatchDogs).

Your right about the pausing, at some points if you pause theres a Biig difference, allot of stuff missing. Damn I thought the PS4 was going to be good too.

So PS4 can’t even run Unreal 4. I have to say, I think the PS4 will be pretty great, but my 2 year old computer has better specs and is more powerful than it. It’ll still be great, I’m sure; but I can’t wait until they come out with a bunch of gameplay video, etc, so that it will peak my interest more. This upcoming holiday season is going to bankrupt me lol

Oh no, the PS4 is able to run UE4. Just give the UE4 and the PS4 more time to mature before we can see the full potential of the two together realized.

This may be true! However, with that thought process, I worry that the “next-gen” games, aren’t going to be so “next-gen” for a year or two.

Dude, guess what? I know, dude. lol You think too simply. You cannot tout your console as being the best damn thing since sliced bread, with massively improved visuals, and then come out with a game that looks like Black Ops 2. That’s my point. At any rate, the PS4 won’t even have nearly as good visuals as my 2 year old PC.

            Ah, your a PC snob.

Well I’m not going to waste my time with a thought out and intelligent reply then. Enjoy your thousand dollar rig that almost no one can afford, for that’s the point of game consoles. Affordability.

I can afford both.lol like a lot of people. You started a disagreement. It’s cool, I don’t mind. I’m not nearly a PC snob, I’m a gaming snob. I don’t care what I play on. I want to have a good time, that’s all. At any rate, you may buy a PS4. I probably will, too. And you know what? We’ll both be having a crap load of fun. So, ultimately, who cares about opinions anyway?

I wasn’t able to post this yesterday, but the PS4 is capable of running UE4 – a scaled down portion of it. That won’t change. Full usage of UE4 will be on PC’s, unfortunately. UE4 is capable of running, also, on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, too; scaled back. I want the PS4 to succeed, and it will. I wish I didn’t know so much about game engines and multiple platforms, though lol; because I know that the PS4 won’t be all that amazing visually. On the bright side, it will have a TON of games made for it.

UE4 is scalable, meaning any console (or even low end PC) can run it.

Some developer said that it’s impossible for Wii (just like for PS3 and X360) to handle UE4. Don’t forget that PS3/X360 have 7 year old hardware and Wii U’s one is only a little better. And low end PCs r stronger than current gen consoles, just look at mid end PCs they r already on pair with PS4 in terms of power.

Definitely very close to the PC version. Only real difference I see is slightly less particles on the PS4 and a couple of slightly compressed textures. Way to go, Sony! Can’t wait to buy the PS4 so my wife can stop bitching about me always being in the office playing PC games.
