Sony: DualShock 4 light bar can change your mood when gaming in the dark

Everyone is focused so much on the DualShock 4′s light bar being used simply as a built-in Move controller working in tandem with the new camera peripheral for PS4. Scott Rohde, Senior VP Sony World Wide Studios, jumped onto the PlayStation Blog this past week and talked about a new way that games might use the light bar and a dark room to influence the player’s mood while gaming.

ps4controller-5

Playing games in the dark versus a well lit room depends heavily on the game being played. With Move and Kinect gaming, well lit areas are ideal for the cameras. What playing in the dark does for other games is allow it to immerse the player into the game by blacking out the real world around the tv. Who would have thought that the light bar on the new DualShock 4 could be used to color that dark space in front of the player to influence things like their mood while gaming. Rohde paints this picture pretty well:

A lot of gamers, myself included, like to play in some dimly lit rooms. And when you’re playing a game and the whole area around you changes color slightly based on what that light bar is doing, it’s not something you’re staring at and your expecting, but it changes your mood and it changes the way you feel when, whatever it is, when you fire a button, when you step into an area where you are in a cold blue area – think about Journey. You’re in a cold blue area, and then you move into more of an orangey earth tone – a warm area. And that controller is coming with you.

When the whole room around you is sort of suddenly changing from the blues and greens into the oranges and yellows, you might not really even know what’s happening, but your whole sense of immersion is definitely greater. It’s a really good thing. I get really excited about that color bar.

I help but imagine a character like Nathan Drake traversing an underwater level while the controller is illuminating the space in front of me with a fluctuating blue ambient light effect. Then coming out of the water and engaging in all sorts of explosions and gun play while the light bar flashes and pops all sorts of reds and oranges, effectively surrounding me in the warm light of the in-game explosions.

In addition to this light show experience, the new speaker in the DualShock 4 will bring near field audio to the player (a la Wii Remote). Those gunshots from Drake’s own pistol popping off, the shells hitting the floor around the feet of your Killzone character, or the zombie bite from behind will all be something new to PlayStation gamers and developers will quite literally have their hands full.

Interesting. These do seem like some great features. I do have to question the purpose of the light bar, though.

It seems sort of silly. If it’s bright enough to be noticeable I could see that being present in some games. Though it won’t work with people who play in bright rooms…

It doesn’t need to work in bright rooms this way. It can just be used as a player ID in local multplayer. I’m blue, my brother is green…etc..etc. I’m betting most games will take this approach.

Yeah, I think the six-axis is enough for simple motions, which is the most they should make us do with this. Moving the controller like a move controller will just be uncomfortable.

While Sony has copied quite an extensive amount Nintendo’s creative ideas, I don’t believe EVERYTHING Sony does is mimicry. I like them as a video game company and plan on buying the PS4. However, it’s quite easy to tell, especially considering that the president of Sony owns a Wii U, that the speakers and 3.5mm jack, newfound on the the PS4 controller, were ripped completely off of the GamePad.

The GamePad is still technologically more advanced and more powerful than the PS4 controller, but I wish Sony would stick to their own ideas. They could come up with some creative ideas if they just tried.

There has been a lot of mimicking in general. Those are good additions though. It’s hard to knock a company for improving their product, even if it is taken directly from another company.

The Wii U Gamepad is an oversized, unncessary fisher-price looking piece of shit. Sorry but I’m not going to censor myself. No one likes the Wii U Gamepad. Why you would even compare it to the Dualshock 4 and I don’t even know. Are you one of those idiots who still thinks the Dualshock 4 has a touchscreen?

I was trying to be honest. The GamePad is more advanced than the PS4 controller. It is. It comes equip with with an LCD high resolution 6.2 inch display, NFC, inner camera, built-in microphone, speakers, headphone jack, t.v. and cable box remote, gyroscope, accelerometer, and 9-axis motion (for comparison reasons: the PS3 controller has six-axis motion). Not to mention that port on the bottom of the GamePad that has large potential.

The PS4 controller has a headphone jack, speakers, touchPAD (directly from the back of the Vita), and PlayStation Move built in (the glowing light).

These are just facts. Your personal insults actually made me chuckle a little. “No one likes the GamePad”? I disagree. Many people talk about how useful it is. There are boatloads upon boatloads of people who express the convience of off-t.v. play. The fact that you use a console without the need to turn on the t.v. every single time is golden. Can you imagine how much one would save on the electric bill? Could you imagine the joy of the teens who have to share a t.v. with their younger siblings?

“unnecessary”? Honestly, if the GamePad is unnecessary, I wonder what you must think of the touchpad on the PS4 controller and the PS Move being built into it as well.

The share button will be the most unnecessary addition to any controller EVER! And you make a very good point about all the other features as well.

The problem I have with Sony is they try to have the most graphically advanced system out of the 3 consoles. If they focused more on gameplay and had like a rewards program ( Like Club Nintendo) I’m sure they would sell a lot more consoles

Yes, it does have more stuff, but it’s really unnecessary for a controller. I don’t want to have to look down while playing. That just hinders gameplay. The PS4 controller has what I’d want from a controller, and a few extra things that only make it better, not change it.

PlayStations controller is the best thats why they’ve hardly changed it over the years, the xbox sucks its a bro system, Nintendos controllers are cool when your 17. Who wants to flail there arms around when they play? There are no good Wii games at all, Mario Galaxy sucked ass its concept would have been cool for one level they didn’t have to make a entire game out of it. Zelda was boring as fuck and looked like shit and handled like crap with that retarded controller, and the way you improved your weapons and shit was sooo bad. Nintendos controllers are made by Fisher Price look it up its true, I saw a documentary on it. Sounds like your a Nintendo fanboy on a PlayStation site, go promote there failing system on another site, you fucking troll.

and it seems like you pretty much said the opposite of all the gaming sites ratings……

maro galaxy won tons of rewards ar “best game of the year” your comment is in denial mario galaxy might be the best mario since mario sunshine there 2 very original games….

zelda twilight princess was a great sequal the majoras mask it left alot of hints and in the end you had to piece it all together lots of rumors of the lore came from it…. the controls were perfect not as good as skyward sword but for a hack slash it was fine since i say zelda is a hack slash adventure game with puzzles and stuff…..

fisher price has never made controllers for anything for anything those rumors were fake nintendo actually came out and said it was there idea……

i did not talk about nintendo at all your eyes decieve you the person who was talking about nintendo was a sony fan boy……..

in every controller review 360 controller got put on top accept for arrow pad sony always got put on the bottom everyone hated dual shock nintendo even with the wii remote got put on top for arrow keys but the 360 controller still won over all the triggers are some of the best for shooters the analogues feel nice everything about it was perfect besides the arrows….

and why would the wii remote get put on top because it was a very good idea you can say what you want but wii dominated 360 and the ps3 in sales….

every thing about the wii U console is a good not a bad if you complain about price just watch out you won’t see whats next. this conversation is almost over because now i will finish it.
the wii U does have games like megaman confirmed in development by capcom! woot!
we have so many games coming just watch hahaa sony fans make me laugh like they know everything….

plus this is why i don’t think games like zelda are rehashed..
how many god of wars came out for ps3? 3? 4? how many zelda games came to wii 1! you could say twilight was a offical wii game but that would be a lie since it was on the gamecube before the wii even came out meaning it was just a port. skyward sword was the only actual zelda that came to wii….

why do you complain about nintendo and there games is it because… sonny ruins theres? lets see the games that sony ruineds jak and dexter, ratchet and clank, crash bandicoot, spyro ect ruined there best games…. games that could had taken both hardcore and casual but they ruined it…… if you don’t believe me look at spyros rating and then look at the new ones play ratchet and clank and then play ratchet and clank 4……. it sucked…..

If everyone hates Nintendos controllers, then why did the Wiimote (a Nintendo controller) sell over 100 million Wiis. Way more than the Xbox 360 or PS3. You think people bought the Wii for its hardware? No way. People LOVED the Wiimote with all the innovation of motion gaming it brought.

The Pro Controller isn’t a rip-off. It’s an advancement of the Classic Controller Pro for Wii. You can see the similarities. The fact that it resembles the 360 controller is PURELY coincidence.

The Pro Controller is actually better than the 360 controller in my opinion (not even going to mention the PS3 controller everyone hates that thing). The analogues have natural thumb placement instead placing the right analogue in that awkward slant.

The battery is rechargeable and VERY impressive (80 hrs), so it’ll save tons of money on batteries. The Pro Controller is much lighter. It has a FAR superior D-pad and a dedicated power button.

In fact, the only two places it lacks in is in analogue triggers and a headphone jack (which can be resolved with aid from the GamePad).

With all those benefits, I’m surprised it costs $10 LESS than a PS360 controller.

            You’re WAY wrong bro.

The Wii U blows donkey balls so fucking much it won’t even beable to handle the true Next Gen games the ps4/720 will have and if the system does get one of the games its gonna be a scaled down completely different shitty crap game that little kids will buy and not know any better like the Wii, thats the reason the Wii did good its because abunch of little kids and middle aged woman and a few idiots like yourself bought the shit. I find that hard to believe considering the Wii launched in 2006 and Move launched in 2009. Sony only developed the product to compete with the Wii and and Kinect.

Oh and just for the sake of information: All Stars Battle Royale, Off-screen play, Playstation Move, and the point shooter accessory are all copies.

Exactly. I stated this previously. The EyeToy was in development in 1999 and released in 2003. It wasn’t until 2008 when actual wand controller and Navigation controller (based upon the Wiimote and nunchuk) were beginning development then released later in 2009.

Bottom line the Move controllers were in development before the Wii was released thus negating your point abiut Sony copying the wiimote and nunchuck. yea the move wasnt released until 2009 I understand but they had been working on it long before the wii was released. not just the eyetoy, actual prototype Move contollers, look it up.

your missing the point they were not developed back then thats what you want to believe but no

            taken from wiki .

PlayStation Move stems from early work on the EyeToy,[45] a webcam-based controller for the PlayStation 2 conceived in 1999 and released in 2003. Early in the EyeToy’s inception, developers experimented with color-based 3D WAND TRACKING,[46] including prototypes using SPHERES.[fn 3] By the time it was released, the EyeToy’s focus was on HANDS-FREE applications. With the emergence of affordable inertial sensors and the success of the Wii Remote motion controller wand,[48] in 2008 Sony began work on productizing its OWN motion controller wand, revisiting the sphere-tracking concept for use with the PlayStation Eye, INTEGRATING inertial sensors, and refining the device from an engineering and a design perspective.[19]

how i read it they saw what nintendo did and took the eye toy and made motion controllers for it

The point is that only the CAMERA was made long ago before the Wii. NOT THE ACTUAL CONTROLLERS. You need to do the research. The stick controllers didn’t begin development until 2008. If you believe they had the technology to make such a controller way back in the last century, you’re a moron. You have to admit that the wand and Navigation controller looked EXTREMELY similar to the Wiimote and Nunchuk.

Wish nintendo could rip off sony’s willingness to make new games.

WiiU is failing no one wants to rip off nintendo. Also tell nintendo to stop using disks…

No hdd and a $125 controller? Yes nintendo is the best!! Don’t support companies with no games.

They’re making games currently. People are just impatient. Nintendo didn’t put HDD in the console to keep costs down and to let people decide their own method of memory. And despite Wii U’s slow sales, that still hasn’t stopped Sony from ripping off the Wii U’s off-t.v. play with off-t.v. play between the Vita and PS4 provided via Gaiku.

Oh and people prefer disks over digital downloads (both of which Nintendo provide). i think people would be upset if games went ALL digital and I’m sure the PS4 and Xbox next will both have disk slots.

Wrong again. “Remote play” was a feature of the Psp and Ps3 long before the Wii U was announced. I was playing Lair, a Ps3 game, on my Psp back in 2007! Sure it was very limited but it worked and can still be used today on select titles.

being able to play very few games with limited functionality.
or be able to play 95% of your games with no drawbacks except the smaller screen.
            i think there’s a huge difference there.
nintendo’s idea seems to work flawlessly its not ripped cause i don’t need to buy a 3ds to make use of this feature.
with sony i had to buy a psp and a ps3 to play maybe 10 games in 7 years same is happening again with the vita ps4 combo.
why don’t they stop trying to do everything and try to be really good at one thing

Actually, Nintendo had the idea first. The GamePad isn’t their first attempt with this type of feature. The Gameboy Advance could link to the Gamecube for dual screen play. The idea was scrapped due to limited rates of Gamecube AND Gameboy owners.

plus games like watch dogs said by devs and alot of other people is better on the wii U there are so many games but fan boys are blinded by the truth… don’t believe all the deception this blog post about nintendo is “doomed” because even if the wii U fails they still aren’t doomed

I own a Wii, Wii U, and Ps3. Why? Because I like them, I may be a Nintendo fanboy but I respect other companies too. Microsoft is the ass hat in the console war. Let’s insult them because they are probably gonna have a tablet controller with a thing called the Mony Move. Nintendo was and is still a great gaming company. Anyone who says otherwise is probably just jealous that Wii U looks so cool, does not cost 599 U.S. dollars, and has a great (non cussing) community

Well considering we’re typing, I never really “opened my mouth”. The main problem with other companies copying Nintendo is that if Nintendo makes it, it’s a sh*tty gimmick for little kids. When Sony and/or Microsoft copy that idea and make a cheap knock-off, they receive praise among all praises to be praised.

Speakers in the new Dual-Shocks as well?? Everyone realises that with a capacitive touch pad, LED emmitters, built in move, these speakers, and the whole new shell design; these controllers are gonna cost everyone a fortune, on top of PS4? on top of Vita (if they continue to push it’s relevance to the system)
And old controllers won’t be very useful if new games will have touch functions programmed in

Just for a second, look at that image and ask yourself: How much can a little bulb covered in plastic illuminate? How much I’ll be able to see it while playing? If you have a move controller, then compare it, turn of the light and see your powerful move lantern. Other words: No, simply no, it’s too small to give significant light, it’s placed in a place where you wont be able to see it, and even if it suddenly becomes a powerful lantern, it’ll drain the battery like crazy.

Dont get me wrong, the PS4 will be a great console and all, but dont blew up it out fo proportions. Be realist from time to time.

lighting up the room in different colors depending on the situation in the game your in like in danger or something to me is a good theory, there has been studies to show colors do have an effect on mood and it is the first console to try it so give it that

I have to agree with you here. there’s no way that little lamp can light up a whole room. even with all the lights off it will have to compete with the TV, which is where the light mood light will be pointing, not at the surrounding room.

on a side note i once saw a TV, by philips i think, that did this rather well, it had leds on the sides the would change colour based on what was on the screen. so if there was somthing blue on the left side and green on the right it would project the same hues of blue and green on the wall behind the TV. it realy made the picture feel like it extended in to the room.

I am more curious to see what they can do by subtly tracking the controller placement. Maybe allow you to peer around corners in a fps with a subtle twist or perhaps allow for proper 3d perspective by tracking the player like they can do with a wiimote and leds taped on glasses… This might of been better as a headset i guess.

do think this is a better feature then the touch pad though, i just cant imagine that being used for more then small minigame things… like swipe to open door. maybe as a mouse trackpad but i think i rather just use the thumb stick… Laptop trackpads are annoying I cant imagine this would be better.
