Hideo Kojima: PlayStation 4 is great, but nothing special

Kojima PlayStation 4Hideo Kojima, the famous creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, recently shared his thoughts on the PlayStation 4. Kojima has been working on Sony’s consoles since the very first PlayStation, and he’ll obviously work on PlayStation 4 games as well.

However, don’t expect pure praise from Kojima. Speaking to Edge Magazine, he said about the PlayStation 4:

“I think it’s great [the PlayStation 4], but it’s nothing special; you could see it coming. It’s the logical evolution of the platform and I think it has to head in that direction.”

He added that he wasn’t surprised by the PlayStation 4 announcement or the features, and that he was eager to see what other developers had in store for the console. Kojima said that he was glad that Sony added all the social features to the console, however, as he put it:

“But just because it has these features doesn’t mean it’s going to be a success. What will really determine whether or not it sells is what titles will be available for the platform.”

Kojima recently wrapped up work on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which is out on the PS3 and Xbox 360. His lat PlayStation exclusive was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots on the PS3, almost 5 years ago. Rumor has it that Kojima and his team are working on Metal Gear Solid 5 for the PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox console.

“But just because it has these features doesn’t mean it’s going to be a success. What will really determine whether or not it sells is what titles will be available for the platform.”

Truer words have not been spoken, and from the looks of things, the PS4 will launch with a good lineup of games.

They always showcase their best but it doesn’t mean they won’t be delayed. Just look at the WiiU and all the launch games that were delayed and delayed again. PS4 sadly won’t be any different.

Major burn there though – and he’s right. Sonys presentation was a video game cock measuring contest.

Very true too, it’s definitely a possibility. I for one am still disappointed that I can’t play Pikmin 3 yet! But, Sony and Nintendo both appear to be going in the right direction for now at least.

I think, well, Nintendo certainly did wrong in delaying the games, but considering Nintendo’s track record, I am sure they were just making the games better. Same has to be done with PS4, i think Quality over Quantity is what must be followed, make Quality games which showcase your consoles strengths and the console will sell

        • Here’s my favourite thing about Nintendo, and it’s what keeps me buying their system and their games: when you buy a Nintendo game, you know it’s going to be beyond the worthiness of your money. Nintendo’s standards of quality are the absolute best in the gaming industry, at least in my opinion. I think it has to do with the integrity of a company being directed towards quality of games, rather than money to be made. This is something that Nintendo and Sony do great with. Microsoft on the other hand, I’m tired with. Their your average North American cash whores. I mean, when you see ads on the damn 360 dashboard, you know that their pushing for sleezy dollar signs. Anyway, end rant.

But Nintendo are so far behind and make too may poor decisions.

I have never seen any machine with good line up for launch, I believe that we will have an idea one or 2 years later only, I just hope it’s cheaper than 500 dollars, since I usually buy all video games

    • Bad lineup*

PS4 only really sold on hype alone and sadly, I fell into the hype on day one, bought myself a Killzone bundle for £7 (after saving up a shit ton of points from my local game store) and I was pretty happy with what I got but the lineup was pretty weak.

The social features will only sell if the Sony moves a lot of consoles. We’ll see how well 400-500 dollars sell. Then we’ll see how useful their strong focus on sociality is.

    wow…that was quick.

  • fsdkfjkj

lol @ ps4daily having only 46 followers on facebook.

thats also the number of people thats gonna be able to afford this machine, with it’s $700 pirce tag rofl

I personally couldn’t give a rats arse about social media I general. Let alone in my gaming console.

  • No Metal Gear Solid 5 for Wii U?

  • I have the same thoughts as this guy. PS4 is great, because it’ll have the amazing exclusives; Sly Cooper, Uncharted, and God of War being my favourite. But it’s nothing special. The only thing on the PS4 that seriously differs from the PS3 is it’s slightly noticeable jump in graphics. That’s nice and all, but it’s nothing extremely cool. See, with Wii U, I knew I was gonna get something new with my money, because I was given a huge boost in graphics as well as an all new way to play. Not that PS4 isn’t worth my money though, hopefully I can save up enough to get one.

Ironically a next gen Metal Gear is what I am looking forward to most on PS4. I doubt when that happens he will say his game is great but nothing special lol.

  • PachterStation

There’s no getting away from the fact that how it’s gone for the Wii U and Xbox One, the PS4 has massively gained. This gen has been a one horse race. Next gen, Sony won’t have it so easy. And the PS4 still hasn’t delivered enough quality games.

“I think it’s great … but it’s nothing special” . What an asinine comment. If something is “great” it is special. *smh*
